It is one of the oldest settlements in the lagoon and capital of the Dogado of Venice in the 8th and 9th centuries, with calli, campielli, coloured houses and small palaces. The 15th century Palazzo Pretorio and the 12th century church of Santa Maria Assunta are worth seeing.
